Position Purpose
The Wound Care Nurse is instrumental in guiding the nursing department's clinical initiatives related to wound management. This position encompasses specialized care delivery, quality improvement participation, and infection control support. Core Responsibilities
Infection Control & Quality Measures
- Directs the facility’s infection prevention initiatives and contributes to ongoing performance enhancements.
- Provides support and expertise to clinical and non-clinical staff in matters related to infection prevention.
- Serves as chair for the Infection Prevention Committee and collaborates across departments on related initiatives.
- Gathers, analyzes, and reports infection-related data for internal and external review.
- Participates in the formulation of infection prevention and control policies.
- Works with leadership and department managers to ensure adherence to infection control guidelines.
- Monitors and investigates healthcare-related infections, logging findings and actions.
- Maintains up-to-date familiarity with CDC infection definitions and recommendations.
- Uses CDC calculation guidelines to track and evaluate infection trends.
- Leads training and in-service sessions on infection control practices for all facility staff.
- Provides guidance to HR on employee health issues related to infection risk, including immunization status and exposure response.
- Collaborates with relevant public health agencies and complies with reporting obligations.
- Operates in alignment with APIC (Association for Professionals in Infection Control and Epidemiology) standards.
Wound Care Specialist Duties (WCS RN)
Working under the direction of the Chief Nursing Officer (CNO), the Wound Care Specialist RN manages wound care procedures facility-wide. This includes evaluating wounds, developing care plans, providing treatment, and conducting patient and staff education. The WCS RN also supports general nursing operations as needed.
Key Clinical Duties
- Conducts initial and ongoing assessments for all patients with wounds, ensuring proper documentation and treatment alignment.
- Demonstrates understanding of the structure and function of the skin, digestive, and urinary systems in relation to wound healing.
- Applies current clinical knowledge to the treatment of wounds, both chronic and acute.
- Recognizes wound staging and develops care accordingly.
- Prevents skin breakdown through preventive programming and monitoring.
- Crafts protocols for treating wounds, ostomies, fistulas, and related conditions.
- Adjusts treatment strategies based on ongoing assessments and care outcomes.
- Administers services within the boundaries of licensed nursing practice.
- Designs education programs for patients and staff and measures their effectiveness.
- Understands and applies medication principles to wound treatment regimens.
- Acts as a consultative expert on wound care to medical staff and facility personnel.
- Oversees documentation to ensure it meets best practice standards.
- Implements recent research findings into everyday wound care strategies.
- Remains active in professional development through membership and training.
- Connects with physicians, patients, and product suppliers to ensure quality wound care solutions.
- Maintains familiarity with medical devices and wound care supplies currently in use.
- Operates medical equipment safely and efficiently.
- Assists in supervising patient care delivery across departments.
Required Qualifications
- Valid New York State RN License
- Wound Care Certification preferred
- Prior experience in skilled nursing is a plus
- Excellent clinical assessment capabilities
- Strong self-starter with excellent communication and interpersonal skills
- Ability to work closely with wound care consultants and multidisciplinary teams
